Potential for apprenticeships to solve talent retention challenges in 2025

Businesses of all sizes should be thinking about how apprenticeships can benefit their workforce, both upskilling their existing employees and attracting and retaining new recruits.

Business leaders, no matter the size of the organisation, will often share one business challenge: attracting and retaining talent within their workforce. Businesses should be maximising apprenticeships as a top workforce planning tool, creating career pathways within their organisations at all levels that support the needs of their business.

The range of apprenticeships

There are more than 700 different apprenticeship standards covering thousands of different job roles. Designed by employers, they ensure that apprenticeships contain the mix of knowledge, skills and behaviours that businesses need.

The breadth of levels

Apprenticeship levels span from Intermediate through to degree-level. This means that whatever the apprentice’s starting point, there will be an apprenticeship that can support their development and progression. From August this year, new ‘Foundation’ apprenticeships will be introduced, providing an additional pathway for young people aged 16–21 or 22–24 for those who meet certain eligibility criteria.

Funding options and financial assistance

Apprenticeships are relevant for employers of all sizes, whether a small business or a larger business. Depending on the size of the business and the age of the apprentice, there can be funding options and additional financial assistance to help reduce or remove the training costs.

Delivery models to suit you

There are many different models of delivery, including in-person, hybrid and online, offering flexible training solutions that can support your business. With a wide range of high-quality training providers to choose from — including independent providers, colleges, Universities and employer-providers — you have the choice to select the training provider that suits you best.

Apprenticeships offer employers a unique way to develop the skills and talent that they need within their organisations to drive forward the products and services that they offer. By investing in your workforce through apprenticeships, you can be in control of the skills and development needs of your workforce.
