Why I use an insurance broker to protect my business
Insurance When you walk into your favourite bar, club or restaurant, you probably do not think about all of the insurance risks that the business faces, or the type of cover that the company has taken out.
However, as the business owner, you will likely think about this all the time. After all, your space is your business and that’s why people come to enjoy their evenings with you.
As one of the founders of bar and events operator Mothership Group – the people behind The Book Club, Queen of Hoxton and Stories in East London, and recently acquired former Audio in Brighton, now Patterns – you might think that I dream about amazing new cocktails and food all day. While this is my passion, the reality is that I think about business risk more than you might expect. In 2010, we began working with Oncover Insurance. They are the brokers who have handled our insurance needs exclusively for almost five years.
For a business like a bar or nightclub, there are numerous insurance risks, which if not handled or covered properly, could damage the future of the company
We use brokers rather than off-the-shelf policies because they are experts in business risk; we host in excess of 1,000 events across our four venues, so peace of mind is key. They advise us on the legal cover that we are required to have, but they also understand our business and what recommended cover a company like ours would benefit from. Using a broker has also been helpful in reminding us of the cover that I would never think of taking out, not because it’s unimportant, but because there are so many risks that as a passionate owner of bar and events company, you simply forget.
Ad hoc assurance
We also use a broker because they can help with one-off events. For example, we may need extra cover around a particular event and our broker, Andreas, is the man that we turn to in these instances. It’s nice to know that.
For a business like a bar or nightclub, there are numerous insurance risks, which if not handled or covered properly, could damage the future of the company. Despite being part of a separate company, brokers are an extension of your business and are a valuable resource for protecting you against business risk.
